A Global Conservation Success Story with Complex Causes
In recent years, reports of whale sightings have surged across multiple oceans, turning once-rare encounters into increasingly common spectacles.
From massive feeding aggregations off East Greenland to humpbacks appearing regularly near New York City and super-groups gathering off South Africa,
the pattern is clear: more people are seeing more whales in more places.
While improved observation technology and citizen science play a role, the underlying drivers point to a mix of genuine population recoveries, shifting ocean conditions, and changing prey distributions.
Dramatic Regional Increases
One of the most striking examples comes from East Greenland.
Whales that were virtually absent from large stretches of this coastline for decades are now arriving by the thousands.
Ship surveys recorded no humpback whales there until 2006; by 2024, observers logged more than 150 sightings.
Aerial surveys and other data from recent summers estimate roughly 4,000 humpbacks, 6,000 fin whales, and several thousand minke whales using the area.
In August 2025, crews reported mixed-species groups of up to 50 baleen whales feeding together near 69°N, well inside the Arctic Circle.
Researchers link this “ecological regime shift” to retreating summer sea ice, warmer waters, and the northward movement of capelin, a key prey species.
Similar trends appear elsewhere.
In the Salish Sea and Puget Sound, Bigg’s (transient) orcas have become far more frequent visitors.
Sighting networks recorded over 14,000 orca reports in 2025, the vast majority Bigg’s, compared with just over 2,000 total reports in 2014.
These mammal-eating orcas are spending more time in inland waters as their population grows and prey (seals and sea lions) remains abundant.
Humpback whales have also recolonized the region after decades of near-absence.
Off the U.S. East Coast, humpbacks that were once rarities near New York Harbor now appear regularly against the Manhattan skyline.
Local monitoring groups that catalogued just a handful of individuals a decade ago now identify 80–100 unique whales annually in the New York Bight, with cumulative catalogs reaching hundreds of animals.
Climate-driven shifts in baitfish distribution appear to be drawing them closer to shore.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the recovery of humpback populations is especially pronounced.
Off South Africa’s west coast, “super-groups” of 20 or more whales have become common, with one December 2025 day yielding photo-identifications of 304 individual humpbacks—the highest single-day count of large whales ever documented.
Sightings of blue and fin whales have also increased markedly in the southeastern Atlantic off Namibia and South Africa, with the majority of modern records occurring since 2012.
Why the Increase?
Several interlocking factors explain the rise in sightings:
• Post-whaling recovery: Commercial hunting devastated many great whale populations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Decades of protection have allowed species such as humpbacks to rebound strongly in several ocean basins, with some Southern Hemisphere stocks growing at rates approaching 10–12% per year.
• Climate and habitat change: Warming waters and reduced sea ice are opening new feeding grounds while shifting traditional prey. Capelin and other forage fish have moved northward or altered their distributions, and whales have followed. In some cases this creates spectacular new aggregations; in others it forces whales into busier coastal zones.
• Prey availability and ecosystem recovery: In places like the Salish Sea, the rebound of seal and sea lion populations has supported growth in Bigg’s orca numbers. Improved fisheries management and reduced entanglement risks have also aided recovery in multiple regions.
• Better detection: More whale-watching vessels, systematic surveys, satellite tagging, acoustic monitoring, and smartphone-enabled citizen science mean more eyes (and ears) on the water. Platforms that match fluke photographs have dramatically improved individual identification and abundance estimates.
Not Uniform Progress
The picture is not uniformly positive.
Eastern North Pacific gray whales have experienced population swings, including an unusual mortality event from 2019–2023 driven by poor feeding conditions in Arctic waters.
While some recent surveys have shown partial rebound, calf production has remained low in certain years and strandings continue.
North Atlantic right whales remain critically endangered, and even recovering populations face rising risks from ship strikes, fishing gear entanglement, underwater noise, and changing ocean chemistry.
Increased coastal presence also creates new management challenges.
Whales near major ports and shipping lanes raise the likelihood of vessel collisions, prompting efforts such as real-time alerts and speed restrictions in places like San Francisco Bay and New York waters.
Looking Ahead
The surge in whale sightings offers a rare piece of encouraging environmental news.
Species once pushed to the brink of extinction are reclaiming ocean space, and ordinary people are witnessing animals their grandparents never saw.
At the same time, the same climate forces enabling some of these range expansions are stressing ecosystems elsewhere.
Continued monitoring, strong protection of critical habitats, and careful management of human activities at sea will determine whether today’s rising sightings translate into long-term population health.
For now, the message from the water is clear: more whales are out there, and they are showing up in places that surprise even the experts.
